Voluntary Action South Lanarkshire, or VASLan, is South Lanarkshire’s third sector interface. Third sector interfaces across Scotland work in line with four pillars outlined by the Scottish Government, and you can read about what we do below. If you would like further information about our work, please visit this page to find annual reports and workplans from previous years.
We maintain a database of volunteering opportunities in South Lanarkshire, and offer appointments to individuals who are interested in becoming volunteers and want to see what’s out there suited to their interests.
We also co-ordinate the Saltire Awards in South Lanarkshire, which recognise the commitment and achievements of young volunteers, and we organise and administer the Volunteering Awards which pick out exceptional examples of voluntary work each year.
We support organisations who currently operate, or are looking to operate, in the social enterprise model, wherein they generate profit like a business, but all profits are reinvested into the social or environmental aims of the organisation.
We provide support for all aspects of social enterprise start-up and development, support existing organisations to develop innovative ways to sustain their activities and services, signpost organisations to relevant training or support agencies, and help with project and business planning.

Another of our core aims is ensuring that third sector organisations (charities, community groups and social enterprises) are well-supported and well-informed.
To this end, we offer funding advice and support with writing funding applications, offer advice on governance and legal structures, run an extensive discount training programme, support with improving policies and procedures relating to volunteers, advertise opportunities with the purpose of finding new volunteers, and provide opportunities for third sector organisations to promote their services via our newsletter, website and social media platforms.
We also offer advice to organisations looking for information on upcoming policy developments, such as changes coming in through the Children’s Act and opportunities associated with the Integration of Health and Social Care.
VASLan contributes to South Lanarkshire’s Community Planning Partnership, and the purpose of this is making sure the third sector’s concerns and interests are fully considered when decisions are made about services in our communities. The Third Sector Forum is one route for gathering these views; these are engagement platforms that meet in South Lanarkshire’s four localities on a regular basis, and provide a forum for discussion, networking and more.
