“Hi, my name is Carol Sneddon, and I am the Treasurer for Lanarkshire Rape Crisis Centre. I have been volunteering for the centre for over 6 years now.  I am from Lanarkshire and had wanted to do volunteering for a while but wanted it to be something that would help support women within our community – once I met the team, I knew it was the right fit for me.

“The best part of volunteering at the centre is the opportunity to be involved with a team of very clever, incredibly motivated, and passionate women with the same purpose. It can be challenging as you have the usual issues of any employer when it comes to staff and premises, and currently rising costs. There is of course always the concerns over future funding.

“I am most proud of watching the centre grow and flourish – we are able to reach more service users in the area and we are supporting them in ways we haven’t in the past which is having a positive impact on the women and girls who engage with our service.

“My motivation to remain involved is partly influenced by our mission to reduce the need for our services – the more we can educate younger people in particular the better the future should be – I want to be around to see the tide change and the demand for our services reduce, rather than continually increase.

“Being a part of the board has given back to me more than I feel I given the centre at times – I have become more educated on the issues surrounding gender-based violence and all things relating to the challenges that come with funding but wouldn’t change it for the world and as long as they will have me – I plan to stay and support the centre for many years to come.”
