Volunteer Story: Margaret Anne, The Moira Anderson Foundation (MAF)

My name is Margaret Anne and I have been volunteering part-time for the past few years at The Moira Anderson Foundation (MAF), based in Airdrie. I became involved after meeting one of the board members at a Business Networking Event in Hamilton and happened to mention that I wanted to do some volunteering. She explained all about the wonderful service that MAF provides to support survivors, of all ages, of childhood sexual abuse and how the demand for the service has unfortunately been increasing in recent years. To become a volunteer I attended an Open Evening, followed by a 1-2-1 interview and then some weekly training sessions - all by very friendly staff members.

There are several different volunteering roles within MAF, but my personal role consists mainly of helping out at fundraising events such as the Annual Ladies Lunch, MAF Hatter Tea Parties or the Family Easter Egg Hunt. I have also carried out some individual fundraising challenges, my most recent of which consisted of a ‘3-Peak Challenge’ - climbing Tinto, Ben Lomond and then Ben Nevis – although not all in the same weekend! Climbing Ben Nevis was always on my bucket list but knowing that I was doing it to raise funds for something so worthwhile, made it all the more special.

MAF is a charity whose services are requested from all over Scotland and it’s good to know that my actions are helping to make a difference to those survivors, albeit in a small way.

The Moira Anderson Foundation was launched in the year 2000 by Sandra Brown as a legacy to Moira Anderson and her family. It provides a place of safety and support for children and adults who have been affected by Childhood Sexual Abuse.
