On June 13, we joined East Kilbride Heritage Group, Cultural Activities in South Lanarkshire, and Duncanrig Secondary School to launch East Kilbride Heritage Book Village Voices to celebrate its 75th anniversary of becoming a new town.
The original booklet was published 40 years ago and tells us the stories of life, based on the people who live in the area over the years. The new booklet is the redevelopment of the original copy of it by working closely with the Duncanrig Secondary School to create the artwork in the booklet as part of the recollecting memories and reminiscing about what life was like in East Kilbride and how much has changed since then.
Hazel Brown from East Kilbride Heritage Group said:
"It has been a lot of hard work, and the school pupils have done amazing artwork for us. We are going to deliver the books to every school and care homes in East Kilbride. We hope that the staff can interact with some of the older people who will remember a lot of the things that we have written about."
Scott Broadfoot, Information Services Librarian at the East Kilbride Central Library said:
"We want to make local history more accessible. With the 75th anniversary of East Kilbride, it's the perfect time for this. And the funding from VASLan has made it all possible. It's been really nice to work with the high school, to see all the wonderful things that they created that we couldn't have done by ourselves."
